Use Hook Rate Benchmark

What You Get

This free hook rate benchmark tool scores any video hook on a 100-point scale and projects the hook rate it is likely to produce, measured against real platform baselines rather than a generic grade.

Hook rate — the share of viewers still watching at three seconds — is the single most diagnostic metric in short-form video. A weak hook rate caps everything downstream: it does not matter how strong your demonstration or offer is if four out of five people never reach it. Most creators only discover a hook was weak after publishing and waiting for data.

This tool scores the hook before you shoot. It returns a 0-100 score, a projected hook-rate range for your platform, a one-line verdict, and a breakdown across six dimensions — pattern interrupt, curiosity gap, specificity, emotional charge, spoken pace, and ad-policy safety — plus three rewritten variants that would lift the score. Five analyzes per day, no signup.

How It Works

  1. Paste your hook — Just the opening line — the first sentence a viewer would hear or read. One line is what gets scored.
  2. Select the platform — TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, or Facebook. Baseline hook rates differ materially between them, so the same hook is scored against a different bar on each.
  3. Read the six dimension scores — Pattern interrupt, curiosity gap, specificity, emotional charge, spoken pace, and ad-policy safety are each scored out of 10 with a note, so you can see which one is dragging.
  4. Take one of the three rewrites — Every analysis returns three rewritten variants with the reasoning behind each. Fixing the lowest-scoring dimension usually moves the projection more than starting over.

Example Output

Input: "Check out this amazing skincare product I found" — TikTok

Score and projection

31 / 100, with a projected hook rate below the 25-35% TikTok baseline.

Verdict: generic opener with no specific claim and no open loop.

Dimensions (each out of 10)

Pattern interrupt 2 — opens exactly like thousands of other videos.

Curiosity gap 1 — nothing is withheld, so nothing needs resolving.

Specificity 1 — "amazing product" names no outcome, no problem, no number.

Emotional charge 2 — mild enthusiasm, no surprise or tension.

Spoken pace 8 — it does read in under two seconds.

Ad-policy safety 10 — no medical or financial claims to flag.

One of the three suggested rewrites

"The third ingredient on this label is the only one doing anything." — lifts specificity and opens a loop the viewer has to close.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good hook rate?
It depends on the platform, which is why this tool scores against per-platform baselines rather than one universal number. TikTok baselines run 25-35% with 40%+ counting as strong; Instagram Reels sits lower at 22-30%; YouTube Shorts higher at 30-40%; Facebook lower again at 18-25%. At or above your baseline, the hook is not what is limiting the video.
How is hook rate calculated?
Hook rate is the percentage of impressions that watch past three seconds. Most platform analytics dashboards expose it directly or give you the components to divide.
Can a score predict whether a video will go viral?
No, and it should not be read that way. A strong hook removes the most common failure point, but retention through the body, the offer, and distribution all still decide the outcome. Treat the score as a pre-publish check on one specific failure mode.
Why does the score not equal the sum of the dimensions?
They are separate outputs. The 0-100 score is an overall judgement of the hook; the six dimension scores are diagnostics that tell you where the weakness is. Use the score to decide whether to rewrite and the dimensions to decide what to change.
How many hooks can I analyze for free?
Five per day without an account. The limit resets every 24 hours.
